Common Brake Problems and What They Mean

Brake issues can go from minor inconvenience to major safety risk in no time. At M C Motors in Ashford, Kent, we regularly diagnose and repair brake faults before they become dangerous or expensive. If something feels off when you brake, here are the most common signs and what they could indicate.

1. Squealing or Screeching

Likely cause: Worn brake pads reaching the end of their life.

Brake pads are designed to squeal as they wear down — it’s an early warning system to let you know it’s time to replace them. Ignoring it will only lead to more expensive repairs down the line.

2. Grinding Noise

Likely cause: Brake pads are completely worn out and metal is contacting metal.

Grinding indicates serious wear. At this stage, you may have already damaged the brake discs, which will need replacing too. Stop driving and get the brakes checked immediately.

3. Spongy Brake Pedal

Likely cause: Air in the brake lines or low brake fluid.

A soft, spongy pedal can seriously impact stopping performance. This may be due to a leak or air in the system. You’ll need to have it bled and inspected professionally to restore proper braking feel.

4. Car Pulling to One Side

Likely cause: Sticking caliper or uneven pad wear.

If your car veers left or right under braking, it’s a sign something’s not working evenly. This can affect your control and needs to be checked promptly.

5. Brake Warning Light

Likely cause: Brake fluid level, pad wear sensor or ABS fault.

Brake lights shouldn’t be ignored. If one comes on, book in for a diagnostic — we’ll check sensors, fluid levels and the full system for faults.

6. Juddering or Vibrations

Likely cause: Warped brake discs or uneven pad deposits.

If the steering wheel shakes under braking, your discs may be warped from heat buildup. It can also indicate worn suspension or loose components — all of which should be investigated.
