How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT (and Avoid a Fail)

Nobody enjoys MOT day - but with a little preparation, you can dramatically improve your chances of passing first time. At M C Motors in Ashford, Kent, we carry out MOTs every day and regularly see cars fail for simple things that could’ve been fixed beforehand. Here's how to give your vehicle the best shot at passing.

What’s Checked During the MOT?

The MOT focuses on safety, roadworthiness and emissions — not the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. Key areas tested include:

  • Lights and indicators
  • Brakes and tyres
  • Suspension and steering
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Seatbelts and mirrors
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • Bodywork, number plates and horn

Pre-MOT Checks You Can Do at Home

1. Test Your Lights

Check headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights and number plate lights. Get someone to help or use a reflective surface to spot any that aren’t working.

2. Inspect Tyres

Look for damage or uneven wear. Use a 20p coin to check tread depth — if the outer band is visible, your tread is likely below the legal minimum (1.6mm).

3. Wipers and Screenwash

Ensure wipers are clearing the screen properly and replace any that leave streaks. Top up screenwash and check the jets are working.

4. Windscreen and Mirrors

Chips or cracks in the driver’s line of sight can result in a fail. Clean all mirrors and make sure none are damaged or loose.

5. Seatbelts

All seatbelts should fasten, retract and lock securely. Check for fraying or visible damage.

6. Warning Lights

If you’ve got an engine warning light or airbag light on, your car will fail. Book a diagnostic check before the test.

Why Cars Fail MOTs

The most common MOT failures are for minor issues like blown bulbs, worn tyres, low washer fluid, or faulty wipers. All of these can be fixed before the test if caught early.
